An Electric Bike Buying Guide for Beginners: Tips for Finding Your Perfect E-Bike

As a beginner, it can be overwhelming to navigate the various e-bike options and features that are available. In this article, we'll provide a beginner's guide to buying an electric bike.

Electric bikes, also known as e-bikes, have become a popular mode of transportation for many people. E-bike are a convenient and eco-friendly way to get around, and they offer a great way to stay active and healthy. However, as a beginner, it can be overwhelming to navigate the various options and features that are available. In this article, we’ll provide a beginner’s guide to buying an electric bike.

Decide on the style of e-bike you’re after

First and foremost, it’s important to understand the different types of e-bikes that are available. There are three main categories of e-bikes: pedal-assist, throttle-assist, and fully-electric. Pedal-assist e-bikes are powered by a small electric motor that provides a boost of power when you pedal. Throttle-assist e-bikes, on the other hand, are powered by a small electric motor that can be controlled by a thumb throttle. Fully-electric e-bikes, also known as e-scooters, are powered solely by an electric motor and do not require pedalling.

Note: Pedal-assist e-bikes are the only type currently road legal in the UK

Understand Your Journey

Understand your journey

When it comes to buying an e-bike, it’s important to consider your specific needs and preferences. For example, if you plan to use your e-bike primarily for commuting, a pedal-assist e-bike would be a great option. These e-bikes provide a boost of power when you need it, but they still require you to pedal. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more leisurely ride off-raod, a fully-electric e-bike might be a better option.

Tip: When considering hills you would want a motor with high torque.

Understanding the battery performance for range

Another important factor to consider when buying an e-bike is the battery range. E-bikes typically have a range of 20 to 60 miles on a single charge. However, this can vary depending on the type of e-bike, the terrain, and the rider’s weight. If you plan to use your e-bike for long-distance rides or commutes, a bike with a higher range would be a better option. There are fantastic brands like Ampere e-bikes that offer great performance to price ratios.

Tip: Range is generally calculated using the batteries KiloWatt Hours … this number is found by multiplying a batteries Volts by its Amps. To work out the range of an electric vehicle (EV) from the kilowatt-hours (kWh) of the battery, you can use the following formula:

  • Range (in miles) = (kWh of the battery) x (Average energy consumption of the EV in kWh/mile)
  • The average energy consumption of EVs can vary depending on factors such as the vehicle’s weight, aerodynamics, and driving style. However, a commonly used average energy consumption for EVs is around 0.25 kWh/mile.
  • For example, if an EV has a 60 kWh battery, its range can be calculated as:
  • Range (in miles) = (60) x (0.25) = 15 miles

It’s important to note that this is only an estimate and actual range may vary depending on actual usage and driving conditions.

Determine If You Need To Transport Your E Bike

Determine if you need to transport your e-bike

Another aspect to consider is the weight and the size of the e-bike, especially if you plan to transport it on a car or if you have limited storage space. Folding e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular as they can be easily stored and transported.

Generally an e-bike is heavier than a traditional bicycle, but every year offers lighter options. We have a belt drive e-bike that weighs only 14Kg!

Decide on a budget that suits your journey

When it comes to the cost, e-bikes can vary widely in price, depending on the features and quality of the components. A basic e-bike can cost around £1400, while a high-end e-bike can cost several thousand pounds. It’s important to set a budget and consider what features are most important to you. In general, it’s always a good idea to invest in a quality e-bike that will last for many years.

What are the key factors that determine the price of an e-bike?

Several factors determine the price of an e-bike, including:

  • the type and quality of the electric motor,
  • the materials and components used in the bike’s construction,
  • the brand and reputation of the manufacturer,
  • and any additional features or technologies included on the bike.

Additionally, the price of an e-bike may be influenced by factors such as the location of the retailer (import costs) and local regulations and taxes.
