NewGen was born in 2019 from founder Laurie Campbell’s frustration with his commute. Fed up with wasting hours crawling across London on the 345 bus, he dreamt of a better way to get around: one that was enjoyable, reliable and consistently quick. As a non-cyclist who wore smart clothes to work he wasn’t interested in cycling and showering, and as a trained engineer he also knew battery tech was good enough to power a small vehicle that could get him to work on his terms.

Inspired by his passion for custom motorcycles, Laurie designed a machine that was comfortable, stylish, and would help him to avoid the worst of the traffic. His elegant, looping frame design combined a wide, soft saddle and a relaxed riding position with a robust drive system and chunky tyres to create a fully road-legal machine that was classed as an ebike, but looked like nothing else on the road – and as a nod to his old commute, he named it the ‘345’.

Laurie rightly believed other people would be interested in his design and began selling 345s in small numbers. This caught the attention of Marie Guyot, who shared Laurie’s vision for a better way to travel. After working together for a few months in the evenings and weekends, Marie and Laurie saw the potential and quit their day jobs in 2021 to launch NewGen Bikes as a formal business.
