Frequently Asked Questions

What are electric Bikes?

An electric bike is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor used to assist propulsion. Electric bikes are also known as e-bikes, ebikes, electric bicycles, and e-bicycles. E-Bikes fall into one of two categories, those that assist with throttle and those that assist with pedal-power.

What is the best electric bike to get?

When purchasing an electric bike, it's best to consider why you need one. Consider where you will be riding, for how long and whether or not you will need accessories. It’s also important to think about your budget. When talking to your dealer, be sure to ask the right questions and explain what your needs are.

Do you have to pedal an electric bike?

It depends on the bike. Some electric bikes sold in North America will operate by simply turning the throttle. Most bikes in the UK however do require some pedalling, and the throttle is used to assist with going uphill. The electric element of the ebikes is designed to assist, so you wont need to pedal hard, if at all.

What electric bikes are legal in the UK?

E-Bikes are legal in the UK and are classed as regular non-assisted bicycles. However if an e-bike travels more than 15.5mph, has a motor that generates more than 250 Watts of power or motor assistance can be provided without the bike's pedals being used, then it is legally treated as a moped or motorbike, and the same legal requirements apply.

What is the range of an electric bike?

The range of an electric bike varies depending on the size of the battery, the average speed, terrain, weight, etc. Electric bikes with a smaller 48V or 36V battery, the typical range will only be 15-35 miles per charge.

What are electric bikes used for?

Electric bikes are the ideal choice of vehicle for a variety of circumstances from commutes, leisure rides, off-roading, deliveries and more. Electric bikes come with all sorts of accessories, capabilities, sizes etc. So whatever the need, there’s an electric bike to suit.

How do electric bikes work?

Electric bikes rely on extra components that work together to allow it to operate; an electric motor, the battery, the sensor and the electric display. Battery-powered assistance comes via pedaling and, in some cases, a throttle. When you push the pedals on a pedal-assist e-bike, a small motor engages and gives you a boost, this is especially useful for going up hills, and riding on rougher terrain.

How fast do electric bikes go?

Speed varies depending on the power of the electric bike you choose. It also depends on the battery size, the terrain and the weight of the bike (and rider). In the UK the legal speed limit of an electric bike is 15.5mph. To adhere to this law, many electric bikes will be capped or locked to ensure they can not go over the legal limit.

How much are batteries for electric bikes?

The cost of spare batteries for electric bikes depends solely on the bike. On average, an electric bike battery can cost anything between £200 and £500, however some batteries may cost more. Some bikes may be purchased with a spare battery, or your electric bike dealer may offer a deal on second batteries, so it’s always worth asking at the time of purchase.

Why are electric bikes heavy?

Electric bikes are heavy because of the additional materials and weightier frame. The motor, battery, display screen, control system, and the wiring all add to the weight. Additionally, extra weight is added to the frame to hold up the motor and so that the bike is maneuverable even at high speeds.

When were electric bikes invented?

In 1895, tinkerers patented the first bicycles with electric motors.

What to look for when you're buying an electric bike

When purchasing an electric bike, it’s important to consider where, when and for what distance you plan to ride it. Electric bikes vary in power and distance so be sure to find a bike that suits you. It’s also worth considering how you plan to store your ebike. Many electric bikes can fold and be easily stored in smaller spaces. Lastly, do you require an electric bike that can carry and store additional items such as bags? If so, you should look at the bike weight limit and capacity.

To ensure that you choose an electric bike that ticks all the right boxes, it’s always worth asking your dealer to advise you. We also recommend test riding your e-bike to make sure it's the perfect match for you.

Do electric bikes need charging?

Most e-bikes have gears that are controlled using the levers on the handlebars in the same way you would for a normal bike.
To change gear smoothly just keep pedaling, as you move through the gears using the levers on the handlebar. The gears on an electric bike will determine how much assist is provided by the electric motor. The higher the gear, the more assist. This may vary with different brands.

Do electric bikes help you get fit?

E-bikes can be used to get fit and help in weight loss. Like regular bikes, they prompt physical exercise and only assist with pedaling. If you’re riding your electric bike regularly, you can burn calories in order to get fit and lose weight.

Do electric bikes charge when you pedal?

Whilst pedalling will not charge the battery of your electric bike, it will help save energy and can help reduce how fast your battery is drained. The more you pedal, the less power your motor will need to use, which can result in a small increase in battery life.

Do electric bikes need a licence?

No. You do not need a license to ride an electric bike. Safety rules of the road do apply, however, and riders should follow the safety rules when riding.

Can electric bikes go uphill?

Electric bikes are perfect for going up hills. The electric assistance gives riders the boost they need to tackle going uphill. Some electric bikes are better than others when it comes to hills, so it’s worth testing a few out or asking your dealer. Some Electric bikes also come with a throttle, ideal for those steeper hills.

Do electric bikes need to be registered?

You do not need a license to ride an electric bike and it does not need to be registered, taxed, or insured.

Are electric bikes waterproof?

Most electric bikes are water-resistant. Your eBike won't catastrophically fail if it gets splashed with a little water, or if you ride it while it's drizzling. But the amount of water electric bikes can withstand differs between models.

Can electric bikes pull a trailer?

Absolutely! Electric bikes are ideal for towing trailers. The electric assistance from the motor allows riders to go further and faster without noticing the extra weight.
